Potra Kund
Potra Kund is a historic water tank located in Mathura, right in front of the Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple. This Kund is an enclosed water area made from red sandstone, with steps leading down to the water. It is wide and impressive, and dates back to ancient times when it was within the walls of King Kansa’s massive prison.
According to legend, Shri Vasudeva and Devaki, parents of Lord Krishna, used this Kund for bathing. It is also said that Devaki’s clothes were washed here after she gave birth to her sons. Originally, this sacred pond was called “Pavitra Kund,” meaning “pure Kund.” Over time, it became known as Potra Kund, but it remains an important place with a rich history in Mathura’s spiritual landscape.
