Punchari Ka Lautha

Punchari Ka Lautha is a unique and beloved temple in the Braj region, dedicated to Lautha, a close friend of Lord Krishna. The story behind this temple is deeply moving: Lautha was waiting for Krishna to return to Govardhan after leaving for Mathura. To this day, the deity of Lautha remains seated, symbolizing his eternal wait for Krishna’s return. The idol of Lautha here is red and seated, capturing his faithful vigil.

Govardhan, the sacred hill near which the temple stands, is said to resemble a cow. Its eyes are symbolized by the holy Radha Kund and Shyam Kund, while its back end, known as “Punchari,” marks this special location. This is why Lautha is known as “Punchari Ka Lautha.”

The temple holds great significance in the parikrama around Govardhan Hill. Completing the eastern parikrama brings devotees to Punchari Ka Lautha, where they can begin the western part of the sacred walk. The story goes that when Akrura took Krishna to Mathura, Lautha asked Krishna when he would return. Krishna promised to come back the day after tomorrow, and since then, Lautha has been waiting, refusing to eat or drink until Krishna returns.
