Charan Pahadi, Nandgaon
About Charan Pahadi
Charan Pahadi is a sacred hill located to the west of Nandgaon. It holds deep spiritual significance in the stories of Lord Krishna. While herding cows, Krishna would play his flute on this very hill. The sound of his sweet, melodious flute was so enchanting that it would bring together hundreds of thousands of cows. The legend says that the hill became so soft from the sweetness of the music that it melted under his feet, leaving impressions of Krishna’s footprints. These footprints, known as charan chihna(footprint), are what give the hill its name: Charan Pahadi.
Another important event linked to this place is when Akrura, a great devotee of Krishna, came to Nandagaon on King Kansa orders to bring Krishna and Balarama to Mathura. When Akrura saw Krishna’s footprints on Charan Pahadi and in the nearby sand, he was overwhelmed with emotion. He cried tears of joy and devotion, rolling on the ground in ecstasy. Even today, pilgrims and devotees feel deep joy when they see Sri Krishna’s footprints here.
Near Charan pahadi are Rohini-kunda, Mohinī-kunda and a number of posts in a field for binding cows. This is the site of Nanda Baba’s cowshed. One can still see stone posts here. Brajwasi ladies worship these posts on special occasions
