About Pili Pokhar

Pili Pokhar, also known as Priya Kund, is a beautiful pond located in Barsana. The name “Pili Pokhar” means “yellow pond.” This pond is surrounded by pilu trees, which produce an abundance of small, sweet fruits.

It is said that Shrimati Radha Rani used to visit this place under the pretense of collecting these pilu fruits. Here, she would playfully interact with Shri Krishna, who would come from Nandgaon to join her in many joyous pastimes.

One time, Radha Rani, the unmarried daughter of Kirti, along with her friends, visited Nandgaon to see Yashoda Maiya, Krishna’s mother. Seeing Radha Rani’s beauty and grace, Yashoda was so captivated that she wished to have Radha Rani as her daughter-in-law. In her heart, she hoped Radha Rani would marry her son, Krishna. As a symbol of her wish, Yashoda painted Radha’s hands yellow.

Radha Rani was happy in her heart, but when she returned home to Barsana, she felt shy and embarrassed about her yellow-colored hands. So, she washed and scrubbed her hands in this pond, which turned its water yellow. Because of this, the pond became known as Pili Pokhar.
