Talvan

Talvan

Talvan, located in the peaceful Tarsi village, is a significant place in the history of Lord Krishna’s pastimes. This forest is famous for being the site where Lord Balarama, the elder brother of Krishna, killed the demon Dhenukasura. The forest’s name, Talvan, comes from the word “tala” which means palm trees. Once filled with numerous palm trees, only a few remain today near the temple of Balarama.

In Talvan, there is a small but beautiful temple next to a lake called Sankarsana-Kunda. The temple has a striking 3-foot-tall deity of Lord Balarama, along with His consort, Srimati Revati, and Lord Krishna.

Pastimes at Talvan

Talvan was once guarded by the cruel demon Dhenukasura, who had been appointed by King Kansa. Along with his wives and sons, Dhenukasura made sure that no one except Kansa and his followers could enjoy the forest’s sweet tala fruits. Ordinary people and even animals avoided this place out of fear of the demon.

One day, Krishna’s close friends, like Sridama and Subala, approached Krishna and Balarama with a request. They said, “Dear Balarama, You are so strong and powerful! Dear Krishna, You are so expert in defeating demons. There is a forest nearby called Talvan, full of palm trees with fruits that smell so sweet. However, a demon in the form of a donkey guards this forest with his friends. Everyone is afraid to go there, but we know You can defeat him! Please take us there so we can enjoy those fruits.”

Hearing this, Krishna and Balarama agreed to go. When they reached the forest, Balarama shook one of the palm trees, and its ripe fruits fell to the ground. The sound of the falling fruits enraged Dhenukasura, who rushed out to attack Krishna and Balarama with his donkey friends.

Dhenukasura tried to kick Balarama with his hind legs, but Balarama effortlessly grabbed him, whirled him around, and threw him onto a palm tree. The demon died instantly. Krishna then took care of Dhenukasura’s friends, defeating them all. As the battle ended, the once-dangerous forest became safe again. The cowherd boys and everyone else could now freely enjoy the sweet tala fruits.
