About Ter Kadamb

Ter Kadamb is located exactly halfway between Nandagaon and Javata, and it is a special place where Rādhā and Krishna’s pastimes, especially their rāsa-lilā, took place. A platform has been built here in memory of these divine events.

In the afternoons, while grazing His cows, Krishna would climb a kadamba tree and call His favorite cows—Śyāmali, Dhauli, Pitambari, Kalindi, and others—by playing His flute. The sound of His flute was so magical that the cows would immediately gather around Him. Krishna would count them using His jeweled necklace, and if any were missing, He would play the flute again, calling their names until all the cows were present. Only after gathering the full herd would He return home.

On full moon nights, Krishna would again climb the kadamba tree and play His flute, but this time, He would call the gopis by their names. Mesmerized by the sound of His flute, they would forget all their worldly concerns and rush to meet Krishna in a state of enchantment. Together, they would perform the rāsa-lilā, a divine dance full of joy, music, and love.

The name “Ter-Kadamb” comes from this pastime, where Krishna’s flute call, or “ter,” would gather both the cows and the Gopis beneath the kadamb trees. Although many Kadamb trees once thrived here, most have disappeared due to stagnant rainwater. However, devoted souls who visit this sacred place continue to plant new kadamb trees as a form of worship and remembrance.

One special event celebrated here is Gopāstami, on this day, the brajwasis bring small boys dressed as Krishna and Balram from Nandgaon to Ter-Kadamba. They organize a special gathering called samāja where they sing devotional songs, beautifully worship the cows, and feed them grass and jaggery as a sign of their devotion and love for Krishna.
