Prem Mandir History

The foundation stone of Prem Mandir was laid by Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj on 14th January 2001. Thousands of devotees were present on this special day. The temple took around 12 years to build, with the help of about 1,000 skilled artisans. The total cost was around 150 crore rupees. The grand opening took place from 15th to 17th February 2012. The temple was opened to the public on 17th February. The main deities of Prem Mandir are Shri Radha Govind (Radha Krishna) and Shri Sita Ram.

The dream of building this temple began in 1946 when Shri Maharaj Ji was just 24 years old. He made a promise to build a grand temple in Vrindavan. He wanted it to represent divine love for all time. One day, he visited Vrindavan with his friends. They were studying Sanskrit grammar there. When he saw the famous Rang Ji Temple, he said, “I too will build a very big temple in Vrindavan.” His friends laughed at him and said it would be hard and not fun.

But Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj did not give up on his dream. Many years later, he built Prem Mandir, fulfilling his promise and creating a symbol of love and devotion for everyone.

Prem Mandir is built on a strong 20-foot-deep granite foundation. The temple is made of high-quality white Italian Carrara marble, which makes it strong and beautiful. This design will help the temple last for many generations.

A special pathway surrounds the temple, called the mandir prāṅgaṇ. Visitors can walk on this path to see 84 panels carved on the outer walls. These panels show the loving pastimes of Shri Radha Krishna.

The temple, including its flag, is 125 feet high, 190 feet long, and 128 feet wide. Inside, there are statues of the four previous Jagadgurus, Rasik saints, and the Ashtamahasakhis. There are also scenes showing different leelas (divine acts) of Shri Radha Krishna.

The walls have many devotional poems called pad sankirtans by Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj. These poems add to the temple’s spiritual feeling.
