Radha Kund Story

Radha Kund is a very special and holy Kund located in Govardhan, in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh. It is deeply connected to the love story of Lord Krishna and Radha, and it has a divine history.

A long time ago, a fierce demon named Arishtasur took the form of a bull and charged at Krishna in anger. His eyes were red, and he dug the earth with his hooves, ready to attack Krishna with his horns. But Krishna, with his incredible strength, caught hold of the bull’s horns and threw him aside, just like a strong elephant would toss a smaller one. Although the bull was tired and weak, he attacked Krishna again, but Krishna easily overpowered him, broke his horns, and kicked him to the ground, where the demon died.

After killing the demon, Krishna went to meet the Gopis, including Radha, to enjoy some time with them. But the Gopis stopped Krishna, saying he was impure because he had killed a bull, which is considered sacred. They told him he needed to cleanse himself before they could be with him.

To prove he was no longer impure, Krishna used his powers to call all the holy rivers and lakes of the world to come and fill a large hole he made in the ground with their waters. This became known as Shyam Kund, a beautiful lake. Krishna bathed in it and declared himself free of any sin. However, the Gopis, led by Radha, refused to enter the lake, saying it was dirty since it washed away Krishna’s sins. They decided to create their own lake.

In a special and divine moment, Krishna called upon the holy waters from sacred rivers and asked them to go to Radha. He wanted them to ask Radha for permission to fill her lake, Radha Kund, with their waters. The holy waters, full of love and devotion for Radha, went to her and humbly requested her to let them serve her by filling her lake.

Radha, moved by their respect and love, agreed to let them help. The waters from Shyam Kund, Krishna’s Lake, then flowed into Radha Kund, connecting the two lakes. These lakes now stand side by side, symbolizing the eternal and unbreakable love between Radha and Krishna, and are considered sacred to this day.

Today, Radha Kund and Shyam Kund are two sacred lakes side by side. Radha Kund, especially, is considered one of the holiest places, where Lord Krishna and Radha are believed to have shared many loving moments. Devotees come from all over the world to bathe in these waters and feel closer to the divine love of Radha and Krishna.
