Mansi Ganga Kund is a large, holy lake located in the middle of Govardhan town. It is believed to be just as sacred as the River Ganges, and some even say it is more powerful. While bathing in the Ganges can wash away all sins, bathing in Mansi Ganga not only does this but also helps people develop prema-bhakti—the purest love and devotion to Lord Krishna.

On one side of the lake, the rocky cliffs of Govardhan Hill rise up, while the other sides have long stone steps leading down to the water. Many kings, especially the Rajas of Bharatpur, spent a lot of money to repair and maintain this lake. The current shape of the kund was made by Raja Man Singh of Jaipur, whose father built the nearby Harideva Temple.

Mansi Ganga History

Lord Krishna spent his early years in Gokul, performing divine pastimes for seven years before moving to Mathura, where he killed the evil King Kansa at the age of 11. After the events of the Mahabharata, when Lord Krishna returned to Mathura, his parents reminded him of his promise to visit the four holy abodes (Char Dham). In response, Lord Krishna said that instead of traveling, he would invite the deities of the four dhams and the 33 crore gods and goddesses to reside in Braj, the region where he grew up.

As Lord Krishna grazed his cows across Braj, these deities made their home in the land, transforming Braj into Golok, the heavenly abode. However, the Ganges did not come to Braj. She explained that reaching Mathura would require crossing the Yamuna River, which would dishonor her sister river. To resolve this, Lord Krishna manifested the Ganges in Braj in the form of Mansi Ganga, a sacred lake that carries the spiritual power of the Ganges.

Thus, Mansi Ganga became a divine place, where bathing offers both purification of sins and the opportunity to achieve pure love and devotion to Lord Krishna.
