About Chakleshwar Mahadev Temple

Chakleshwar Mahadev Temple is a sacred spot in Govardhan, situated next to the holy Mansi Ganga. This temple is dedicated to a unique form of Lord Shiva known as Chakleshwar Mahadev, who is deeply revered by devotees in Braj Mandal. Inside the temple, there are five sacred Shiva lingas, with Chakleshwar Mahadev being one of the five primary Shiva lingas worshiped in this holy region.

Chakleshwar Mahadev

The story of Chakleshwar Mahadev goes back to the time of Lord Krishna’s childhood in Braj. When Lord Krishna encouraged the people of Braj to worship the sacred Govardhan Hill instead of Indra, the god of rain, Indra became furious. In his anger, he sent massive storm clouds meant for destruction and ordered them to flood Braj. Heavy rains poured down continuously.

To protect everyone, Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan Hill on his little finger, creating a shelter for all the people and animals of Braj. However, with the rain pouring nonstop for seven days and nights, there was concern about where all that water would go.

Here, Lord Shiva—now known as Chakleshwar Mahadev—stepped in to help. He raised his trident, forming a divine shield, and it’s said that with his blessings, Lord Vishnu’s Sudarshan Chakra appeared. The powerful chakra generated intense heat, as bright as many suns, evaporating the endless rain. Additionally, Sesa Naga (the serpent deity) helped by drinking the rainwater. Through Mahadev’s protection, the people of Braj and Govardhan Hill were safe. In honor of his role, Lord Shiva became known as Chakleshwar Mahadev, the divine protector of Braj.
