About Dauji Temple

Dauji Temple is one of the oldest and most famous temples in the Braj region. Located in the village of Dauji, about 20 kms from Mathura, this temple is dedicated to Lord Balram, the elder brother of Lord Krishna. Lord Balram, also known as Dauji, was born to Mother Rohini eight days before Shri Krishna’s birth in Gokul. The village was originally called Ridha but is now known as Dauji in honor of the temple’s presiding deity.

Inside the temple, you’ll find a striking black idol of Lord Balram, standing at about 7 feet tall. This is said to be the largest idol of Lord Balram in Braj Mandal. The deity is shown with two hands and is beautifully adorned with intricate clothing and ornaments. Next to Lord Balram is the idol of Revati Devi, his consort, who is positioned slightly to the side behind a door opposite Dauji’s idol.

Holi Celebrations at Dauji Temple

Dauji Temple is particularly famous for its Holi festival, known as “Dauji ka Huranga.” Devotees from across the world gather here to celebrate and play with colors in honor of Lord Balram. The event is filled with joy, devotion, and traditional festivities.

History of Dauji Temple

The idol of Lord Balram in Dauji Temple was established around 5,000 years ago by Vajranabh, the great-grandson of Lord Krishna. During the Muslim invasions, many deities in Braj were moved to safer locations, but the deity of Dauji remained here by a clever trick.

It is said that that the idol was hidden in Balabhadra Kund, a sacred pond located on the western side of the temple, to protect it from destruction during Aurangzeb‘s rule. Later, devoted villagers found the idol lying upside down in the kund. They built this temple and reinstated the deity, continuing to worship Lord Balram with great devotion.
