Lohvan
Lohvan is a beautiful and sacred place located on the other side of the holy Yamuna River from Mathura. It is one of the 12 forests, or “vanas,” of Braj. This special forest holds great significance as it was here that Lord Krishna grazed His cows. The name “Lohvan” comes from an important event when Lord Krishna killed a demon named Lohjanghasur.
In Lohvan, there is a serene pond known as Krishna Kund. Along its banks stands the Radha Gopinatha Temple, a beautiful place of worship. Lohvan also has a fascinating cave called Saptarishi Ghufa, named after the seven sons of Lord Brahma, known as the Saptarishis, who performed deep penance here.
The Story of Lohjanghasur
Lohjanghasur was a dangerous demon who terrorized the people of Lohvan and killed their cattle. The frightened villagers went to Lord Krishna for help. Understanding their plight, Krishna confronted and killed the demon. From that time, the forest became known as Lohvan, marking the victory of good over evil.
Lord Krishna’s Pastimes in Lohvan
Lohvan is a delightful forest filled with vibrant flowers and the charm of nature. Here, Shri Krishna performed enchanting pastimes with Gopis. One famous pastime was His playful boating adventure on the Yamuna River. Disguised as a boatman, Krishna invited the Gopis onto His boat and rowed them into the middle of the river. Pretending the boat was leaking, He playfully asked them to throw their pots of milk and yogurt into the water to keep it afloat. The Gopis, captivated by His tricks, begged Him to take them safely across the river.
