About Asheshwar Mahadev Temple

Asheshwar Mahadev is a temple located a short distance from Nand Bhavan in Nandgaon. Known as the fulfiller of all desires, Asheshwar Mahadev is easily pleased with even the simplest form of worship. By offering prayers here, devotees believe that their wishes will be granted. At the temple, there is also a sacred pond called Asheshwar Kund. It is said that Prajanya Maharaj, the father of Nand Baba, used to bathe in this kund to be blessed with children.

Story of Asheshwar Mahadev

When Nand Baba came to Nandgaon, many gods came to have darshan of baby Krishna. Among them was Baba Bholenath, who took the form of a yogi. When Yashoda Maiya saw Baba Bholenath’s appearance, she worried and said, “Baba, whatever you need, take it. If you want money, take money. If you need food, take food. If you need clothes, take clothes.” But Baba Bholenath replied, “Maiya, I don’t want any of these things. I have come only for the darshan of your son. Let me see him.”

Yashoda Maiya hesitated, saying, “Baba, I am afraid of your appearance and my son is only two years old. How can I bring him to you? He might be scared.” Baba Bholenath assured her, “We are not ordinary yogis. I have traveled far just to see your son, and I will not leave without having his darshan.”

Despite his pleas, Yashoda Maiya refused and Baba Bholenath left. He sat down at a spot nearby, hoping for a chance to see baby Krishna. Meanwhile, Lord Krishna, knowing that Baba Bholenath had come for darshan and was refused, decided to perform a leela. He began to cry loudly. Yashoda Maiya, worried and unsure of what was wrong, called the neighboring gopis for help. They suggested that perhaps meeting the baba who had just left might calm the child.

Yashoda Maiya agreed and sent people to search for Baba Bholenath. When they found him, they brought him to see Lala (baby Krishna). As soon as Baba Bholenath held Lala in his arms, Krishna stopped crying. Yashoda Maiya, relieved and happy, said, “Baba, you are very kind. Take whatever you want and stay here.”

From that time, Lord Mahadev stayed in Nandgaon in the form of Asheshwar Mahadev.
