About Gopinath Temple

Gopinath Temple is located in Vrindavan and is one of the seven ancient temples in the city. It was founded by Madhu Pandit, and his samadhi, is near the temple courtyard. The temple’s architecture shows its rich history. The deity of Gopinath was first installed 5,000 years ago by Bajranabha, Lord Krishna’s grandson, but over time, it was lost. It was later rediscovered by Paramananda Goswami at  Vamsi Vata in Vrindavan.

The original temple was built in 1632 AD by Ray Singh, the son of the king of Bikaner. However, it was destroyed by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. The temple was rebuilt with great devotion in 1812 AD. To protect the original deities of Gopinath during Aurangzeb’s attack on Vrindavan, they were moved to Jaipur, where they are worshipped today

Gopinath Temple History

According to legend, Bajranabha, the great-grandson of Lord Krishna, created three deities based on descriptions from his grandmother about how Krishna looked. The first one was “Madan Mohan,” which resembled Krishna’s feet. The second was “Gopinath,” which showed Krishna’s chest, and the third was “Govind Dev Ji,” which showed Krishna’s full face. Over time, these deities were lost.

Around 500 years ago, during the time of the Six Goswamis, the deity of Lord Gopinath was rediscovered. Madhu Pandit Goswami, who had come to Vrindavan searching for the lost deity, found it at Vamsi Vata, near a famous banyan tree, after a great flood. Paramananda Bhattacharya, a close friend of Madhu Pandit, spotted the half-buried deity after the flood waters receded, and Madhu Pandit joyfully retrieved it.

When Aurangzeb attacked Vrindavan, the deities, including Gopinath, were moved to Jaipur for protection. Today, the original Gopinath deity is in Jaipur, while a replica is worshipped in the Vrindavan temple.

In the Gopinath Temple today, the deity known as “Muralidhar Mahaprabhu,” a form of Lord Krishna playing the flute, is worshipped. This form shows both Radha and Krishna in one figure, with a golden color representing Radharani and the flute symbolizing Krishna.

Although the original deities are now in Jaipur, Gopinath Temple in Vrindavan remains an important place of worship for devotees.

Sri Govind Dev Ji and Sri Gopinath are in Jaipur, while Madan Mohan is worshipped in Karoli, a town in Rajasthan.
