Radha Rani Temple,Barsana History

inner Courtyard of radha rani temple

The Radha Rani Temple in Barsana is about 5,000 years old. It was originally established by King Vajranabh, the great-grandson of Lord Krishna. Over time, the temple fell into ruins, and its sacred idols were lost.

Narayan Bhatt, a disciple of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, later rediscovered the idols. In 1675 AD, Raja Bir Singh Deo built a new temple at the site. The present structure was built later with the help of Raja Todarmal, a governor in Emperor Akbar’s court.

Krishna’s father, Nand Ji, and Radha’s father, Vrishbhanu, were close friends. Nand Ji was the head of Gokula, and Vrishbhanu was the head of Raval. When King Kansa of Mathura became cruel, both families moved to safer places. Nand Ji settled in Nandgaon on Nandishvar Hill, and Vrishbhanu settled on Bhanugarh Hill in Barsana, which later became Radha’s home.

Today, both Nandgaon and Barsana have famous temples dedicated to Radha and Krishna. The temple in Nandgaon is called Nand Bhawan. The temple in Barsana is called Radha Rani Temple or Shriji Temple, and it stands on Bhanugarh Hill.
