Rangji Temple, Vrindavan

About Rangji Temple

Rangji Mandir is the largest temple in Vrindavan and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his form as Rangaji, who is shown resting on the Sesa Naga, a serpent. The temple’s design is inspired by the famous Sri Rangam temple in Tamil Nadu and is built in the South Indian Dravidian style. It features an impressive “gopuram” or tower above the main entrance. The temple was constructed by Seth Radha Krishna and Seth Govind Das of Madras, guided by their guru Swami Rangacharya, at a cost of Rs 45 lakhs

When you enter through the western gate, which is made of carved stone, you will see electrically operated displays on either side that depict stories from the lives of Lord Rama and Lord Krishna. On the eastern side is another five-story gopuram. In the space between these two towers lies a large pond called the “Pushkarni.”

Opposite the pond, there is a small garden where the deity of Andal devi is brought out every Friday evening. The garden has beautiful stone fountains that operate on special occasions, adding to the temple’s charm.

One of the temple’s major events is the annual Ratha-yatra for Lord Ranganath. Just outside the western gate stands a 50-foot-high wooden chariot, which is used during the Brahmotsav festival. During the celebration, the chariot is pulled by devotees to the nearby Rangaji garden. Though the chariot is smaller than the famous one in Puri, the devotion and excitement of the devotees are just as strong.

History of Rangji temple, Vrindavan

main gate of rang ji mandir vrindavan

Sri Rangji Mandir is a famous temple in Vrindavan dedicated to Lord Sri GodaRangamannar, who is another form of Lord Vishnu. The temple is also linked to Goda Devi, also known as Andal, a well-known 8th-century Vaishnava saint from South India. She was a devoted follower of Lord Krishna and wrote the “Tiruppuvai” poems, which express her deep love for Krishna and her desire to be with him in Vrindavan, where he performed many divine acts.

Andal had three wishes she expressed in her poems “Nachiyar Tirumozhi.” Her first wish was to live at the feet of Lord Krishna in Vrindavan, her second wish was for Lord Krishna to accept her as his bride, and her third wish was to offer “Ksheeranna” (a sweet dish made of rice and milk) in a hundred pots to him. Lord Ranganatha, another form of Krishna, fulfilled her second wish by accepting her as his bride. In the temple, Lord Krishna is represented as a bridegroom holding a walking stick, with Andal Devi by his side and Garuda, his vehicle, standing beside them.

Sri Ramanujacharya, an 11th-century saint, fulfilled Andal’s third wish by making the offerings, while her first wish was completed when Sri Rangadeshik Swamiji built the temple in Vrindavan. The idea to establish this temple came when two brothers from Mathura, Seth Radhakrishnaji and Govind Dasji, expressed their desire to set up the temple. Swamiji saw this as a sign to fulfill Andal’s unfulfilled wish. He sought permission from the divine couple at the famous Sri Rangam temple in South India.

In 1845, skilled workers from Sri Rangam were brought to Vrindavan to start the temple’s construction, and the work was completed in 1851, costing around Rs 45 lakhs. Today, the magnificent Sri Rangji Mandir stands as a symbol of divine love and dedication, honoring the divine couple, Sri Goda-Rangamannar.
