About Vishram Ghat, Mathura
Vishram Ghat is an important holy place located on the banks of the Yamuna River in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. It is believed to be the spot where Lord Krishna rested after defeating his cruel uncle, Kansa. The name “Vishram” means “rest,” and “Ghat” means “place,” so the ghat is named because Lord Krishna took a rest here.
Vishram Ghat is surrounded by 25 other ghats in Mathura, with 12 to the north and 12 to the south. Every morning and evening, an aarti, or prayer ceremony, is held here to worship the Yamuna River. The evening aarti is especially beautiful, with oil lamps floating on the river and prayers being sung. It is a sight that visitors should not miss.
There is also a belief that if a brother and sister take a bath in the Yamuna River at Vishram Ghat on the festival of Bhai Dooj, they will be blessed and will not have to go to Yamlok, the place of the god of death.
The ghat’s buildings have been built and cared for over many years by different royal and noble families, making it a place rich in history and devotion.
