Bansivat

bansi vat

Bansi Vat, also known as “Bansi Vat Maharaas Sthali,” is a famous and holy place in Vrindavan. The name “Bansi” means flute, and “Vat” is the Sanskrit word for a Banyan tree. This is where Lord Krishna played his flute to call the Gopis and performed the Rasa lila. Here, Lord Krishna is known as Gopinath, the Lord of the Gopis.

It is said that during the full moon of Sharad Purnima, Krishna played his flute at Bansi Vat, and the sweet sound spread all over Vrindavan. The Gopis heard the magical music and left everything behind to be with Krishna. Some were milking cows, and others were feeding their children, but they all ran to meet Krishna, completely mesmerized by His love. They were willing to give up everything—home, family, and even their safety—just to be near Him.

One interesting story connected to Bansi Vat is about Lord Shiva. He wanted to see the Rasa dance but wasn’t allowed to enter because it was only for Gopis. So, he prayed to Yamuna Maiya, the goddess of the Yamuna River, who turned him into a Gopi. Once disguised, Lord Shiva was able to join the Rasa dance, and Krishna recognized him. Krishna then gave him the name “Gopeshwar Mahadev.” The Gopeshwar Mahadev Temple, near Bansi Vat, honors this event.

Even today, many people believe that under the Banyan tree at Bansi Vat, you can still hear the sound of Krishna’s flute. This special spot is filled with the presence of Krishna, and devotees gather here to listen for the sweet music.
