About Cheer Ghat
Cheer Ghat is a holy place on the banks of the Yamuna River, famous for a story about Lord Krishna and the Gopis . It is said that at this spot, Krishna playfully stole the clothes of the Gopis while they were bathing in the Yamuna and hid them in a nearby Kadamba tree. This ancient tree still stands today, and people believe it is the same one from Krishna’s time.
The Gopis were devoted to Krishna and wanted him as their husband. To show their love, they performed a special prayer called the Katyayani Vrata, asking Goddess Katyayani to help them. One day, while they were bathing, Krishna took their clothes and hung them on the tree. This act was his way of acknowledging their devotion.
Today, the Kadamba tree at Cheer Ghat is a place of worship. People tie colorful clothes to the branches to remember the story. A black statue of Krishna is placed under the tree, and there is also an old temple nearby dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, with a statue made of white marble. Although the river has changed its path over time, devotees still come to Cheer Ghat to pray and honor the sacred tree and the story of Krishna and the Gopis.
